Social-Emotional Learning

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children, teens, and adults develop the skills to understand, manage, and express the social and emotional aspects of one’s life to enable the successful management of tasks such as establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions, and demonstrating care and concern for others. SEL is fundamental to children’s social and emotional development – their health, citizenship, academic learning, ethical development, and motivation to succeed.

SCISC partners with other SEL hubs throughout the State of Illinois and provides professional development, training, and support for SCISC districts. SCISC also assists school leadership teams to implement data-driven strategies that address student trauma and mental health needs. ISBE SEL Hub

Schools that participate in the Resilience Education to Advance Community Healing (REACH) program  receive training in trauma-awareness and the development of trauma-responsive strategies. They learn about tools for self-assessment of trauma-informed policies and practices and the key components of a trauma-focused action plan.
